Help before reading the Da Vinci code?

I want to read the Da Vinci code, i have had it recommended to me several times, but i don't know ANYTHING about the historic and religious background to any of the topics covered.I know that Jesus was born on Christmas, and that's about it... I hate feeling so ignorant, so can anyone help me to understand the necessary background before i start this book?
