Why Are roaches Nesting in the Transistor Radio?

roaches return to the battery operated transitor ratio and climb inside and congregate. I ume they are nesting. Why would they even be attracted to a radio and is there a successful method to deter them (other than professional chemical concoctions). Thanks!
