How to Apostatize from a Certain religion...?

I live in a very very biased religious place (i go to the university of utah). My mom is lds but the rest of my family is not. My gay friend tried to kill himself because of the religion and I prayed and no longer want to practice. what is the most polite straightforward way of getting out of this situation. I don't care what people think but I don't want to have to be rude. How do I break it to my mom? thanks for your help, someone with experience in this area would be great.
